Integrated & Novel Solutions for Flood Mitigation Leveraging, Understanding & Enhancing Nature in Climate Engineering
Flooding is the most common natural disaster worldwide, impacting millions of people and threatening infrastructure, economies, and a sense of security. It is a complex phenomenon and is intrinsically linked to the actions of persons in the wider society. As climate patterns shift, these risks are escalating. Flooding events can be compounded with diverse drivers from both the land and the sea, with rising sea levels and unpredictable weather patterns making flooding more frequent and severe. The INFLUENCE project aims to improve the understanding of how factors like tides, climate, and the local ecosystems interact so we can build better warning systems that will help communities prepare for the future.
While traditional flood modelling often focuses on inland factors, the INFLUENCE project wants to improve the understanding of compound flooding events to:
- Provide earlier and more accurate warnings– saving properties and lives
- Identify which ecosystems are most vital for flood defence
- Build smarter– guide engineers on where and how to build more resilient infrastructure
